Nominated Graduating Informatics Seniors:

Braxton Ehle

“I believe that Braxton Ehle is an exemplary Informatics student, one worthy of the Eisenberg Award. I say this because of Braxton’s direct involvement in the iSchool as our Director of Technology, and also due to his extra-curricular (information-related) activities. As you may know, Braxton was a participant on the iSchool’s team in the Pacific Rim Regional Cyber Defense Competition (PRRCDC), and has subsequently shown his ability to lead our team in the same competition for this year. Braxton has also shown me his compassion for others and their desire to learn. Even as I write this, he is hosting an informal Linux web server workshop in the TE lounge at MGH. If his leadership abilities, passion for information security, and compassion for others does not embody the iSchool spirit, I am at a loss to say what else is required to do so. Braxton has had a profound affect on my life, and so I would urge you to consider him for this year’s Eisenberg Award.”

Peter Kamb

“Peter has shown his talents in a wide range of activities across the iSchool:
Last Summer and into the 2009/2010 school year, Peter worked in the IT Office as a web designer for the Advancement Committee. He worked with David Shepard, Daisy Fry, Ryan Ositis, and Scott Barker to conceptualize and code the new Informatics website. This work is currently being extended to redesign all of the other program websites.
Peter has also been working with Jake Wobbrock’s AIM Research Group to develop new interaction techniques for people with motor control impairments. He became part of the group by proving to be one of the top students in Jake’s “Input and Interaction” class. Their work was recently submitted to the ACM User Interface Software and Technology (UIST) 2010 conference.
He is the Informatics representative on the iSchool Research Committee. He also attended UIST 2009 in Victoria, and is part of the campus-wide DUB Human-Computer Interaction group. He will graduate with a concentration in HCI.
Peter’s team was one of the top 3 finalists in the recent Microsoft Product Planning course, and presented their findings at Microsoft to a large audience including several Microsoft executives.
Finally, Peter’s capstone project is very impressive. He developed an input technique that lets former two-hand typists type with only one hand. He’ll soon show this work at the Undergrad Research Fair and at the Informatics Capstone event, and will base a conference paper on the work.”

Andrew Morton

“Andrew was the first Informatics student I met. He made a great effort to get me and the other first-years active and involved, reaching out to us at every opportunity. I saw him at nearly every event, both social and technical. He made the effort to get out there and rally everyone together. As far as I’m concerned, he is THE face of Informatics. I am not making any further nominations because I can’t think of anyone else who even compares.”

“The president.”

“Good friend, smart person.”

“He’s been an extremely dedicated president and has been unwavering in his commitment to IUGA and the iSchool.”

Marlee Mukai

“She has worked hard to provide student feedback on program changes.”

“She arranged a lot of CSE 373 meetings.”

Sarah Wang

“Sarah is definitely a model student and has contributed a lot back to the i-School.”

“She contributes a lot to IUGA.”

Tim Wang

“Tim was one of the first people to reach out to me. He originally got me interested in the iSchool and I feel that his enthusiasm has set a positive example for others to become more active”

Mark Vitazko

“Brilliant Designer, very active in the iSchool community and all around great human being. PICK MARK PICK MARK!”

Server Workshop Follow Up

Posted by Braxton Ehle

First of all, thanks to all of you who attended my workshop. I had a great time and I hope you all did too.

I’m sorry we weren’t able to get all the way through the content I had prepared, but I feel like the things we did cover, we covered thoroughly rather than just breezing over them. For those of you that missed the workshop, or wish to finish configuring your server, I’ve linked them below:

The workshop outline with all necessary commands: http://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0AcdjcDS8H8_JZGZkYjZqZjJfOTJkOWRoN3pnZw&hl=en

The audio recording of the event: http://iuga.info/workshopAudio.zip

There are a few tutorial websites that I find myself consistently going to for advice on installing new services, a few of my favorites are: http://howtoforge.com http://www.cyberciti.biz/ http://irongeek.com. If you do run into trouble while configuring a Linux server, you should find the Linux community to be very helpful. I’ve found good help at http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/ http://www.debian-administration.org/ http://www.debianadmin.com/

Thanks again to those who were able to make it. I’ll look into hosting a followup workshop, but either way, please don’t hesitate to ask me any Linux/server related questions either by email to iuga@braxtonehle.com or in the TE lab.

2010 – 2010 IUGA Officer Candidates

Posted by Andrew Morton

President

Dave VS Nick

Dave Danley

Through working as a Project Manager and a Telecommunications Engineer for one of the world’s largest telecommunication carriers, I developed strong leadership and interpersonal skills. I lived and worked abroad in Europe for nine years, one year of which I spent traveling the world as a TV Journalist. From these experiences I gained many skills, including how to be flexible and quickly adaptable to new situations and tasks. These skills along with the fact that I’m personable and outgoing are what I am eager to bring to the table should I be elected as your new IUGA President. I welcome the challenge of leading IUGA toward a prosperous and productive 2010/2011 school year. Thank you.

Nick Ling

Recent studies from a reputable* research laboratory have indicated that the addition of nick ling to the daily IUGA diet can boost activity, morale, and awesomeness to the organization.

The study says that Nick has had a wide range of experience. He was a first-year representative this year, and believes it was very effective at teaching the ins and outs of IUGA operations. That’s not the end of the leadership experiences: VP of his fraternity (PDT), Director of the model United Nations Environmental Programme, Relay for Life Captain, and more **.

But really, I understand how important it is to have great relationships the students you take classes with on a day to day basis. School isn’t just about taking classes; it’s about forming relationships, networking, opportunities, and ideally, friendships and laughter. My goal is to rally us INFO students and I’m overly-eager and more than gosh darn willing to devote myself to efforts to bring our major together.

I pride myself on being approachable, optimistic, and reliable. If I haven’t met you yet, then Hi, I’m Nick Ling, and I’m running for President ***.

*underfunded
**but who’s counting?
***though, CEO has a nice ring to it.

Vice President

Osman VS Valentina

Osman Surkatty

As an active member within the Informatics student body, I believe that I would be best suited in the role of Vice President. I have held numerous positions in student organizations including: President of the Information Technology club at Yakima Valley Community College and Vice President of Projects at Key Club at the West Valley high school in Yakima, WA. With these past experiences, I believe that I would be not only an excellent candidate for the position, but also one that would take the position seriously. If elected, I will work closely with both the President and the other officers to ensure that a wide variety of fun and informative activities and events are available to iSchool students. Vote for me! :)

Valentina Ferrari

I would like to be the Vice President of IUGA because I’m very passionate about Informatics and the iSchool. I have been at UW since 2007 so I would be able to help new students find the resources they need, and the best places on the Ave. I was an Honors Peer Mentor for two years and I’ve been working on campus since my freshman year. The picture is from when I was welcomed by Tzar Nicholas II in Moscow in 2009 in the other Red Square, jk. Vote for me!
Thank you!

Director of Finance

Annika Wiesenbach (unopposed)

I have been a Fiscal Specialist in the UW School of Dentistry for the past 8 years.  As such, I am well versed in procurement, reimbursement, and reconciliation procedures, as well as university policies regarding appropriate use of funds.  I am also minoring in mathematics, so the arithmetic won’t be a problem.  I think being an IUGA officer would not only be a great opportunity for me to get to know more of my fellow students, but also to develop my leadership and interpersonal skills.  Thank you.

Director of Operations

Kristi vs Charlie

Kristi Nguyen

Hey Guys,

My name is Phuc (don’t even try to pronounce my name :P ) aka Kristi and I’m a junior.

I know some of you aren’t very involved in IUGA and honestly, I was like that to.
However, I’ve always wanted to become more active in IUGA though and think this is the perfect opportunity to do so.

Some relevant skills I have are previous experience in similar positions. My last officer role was Recording Officer in Phi Theta Kappa, the honor society of two year colleges where I also performed core operational duties.
I’ve also held various volunteer roles that involved bringing a lot of people together to accomplish a common goal.

What IUGA does is it brings us INFO students together, and it works really hard to help us succeed: by giving us with
valuable professional, social, and educational opportunities, not to mention help build strong relationships amongst our school.

I would love to contribute my abilities and strengths to increasing the visibility and causes of IUGA.
I’d be proud to represent IUGA as Director of Operations and hope that you’ll support me in this endeavor.

Thanks!

Charlie Tran

I am a good fit for the Director of Operations position because of my organizational skills and attention to detail. I have relevant experience as a technical support team member for the CSE department and as a member of the Honors Student Advisory Panel (HSAP). I maintain a meticulous planner for myself on a daily basis and help set up several catalyst surveys for student input projects on HSAP. I send out emails consistently as a part of my technical support work, and help with sending out student announcements as part of my membership on HSAP. With a combination of experience and skill, I believe I can fulfill the duties as Director of Operations with enthusiasm while also serving the Informatics community I am a part of.

Director of Public Relations

Ephrem Yemru (unopposed)

I am passionate and dedicated to making the iSchool a better place for current and future Informatics students. The Director of Public Relations position with IUGA would be a perfect avenue for me to promote the Informatics program and help other students. I am an excellent communicator and have great leadership skills, but most of all I love to interact with people. It is these skills and more that I would bring to this position, should I be elected. So vote Ephrem for Director of Public Relations! Thank you.

Director of Information Technology

Andrew VS Harrison

Andrew Oss

December 2007 marked a major life transition for me. As the calendar year closed, so did one season of my life; I completed 6 years of service as an Airman in the United States Air Force and returned to civilian life. Since that date I have started the process of attaining two life long goals: get an education in a field that I am truly excited about and become a member of the student body at the University of Washington. I believe that it is my time and experience as a member in the military, as well as my breadth of experience working with diverse groups of individuals not only here at the iSchool but in prior job experience living in foreign countries and working with local nationals that make me the best candidate for Director of Information Technology.

As the Director of Information Technology, I will support the Informatics Undergraduate Association council and student body to the best of my ability in a number of ways. Like many of my classmates, I enjoy a good LAN party and board game night and believe that at a minimum, I have the prior experience to manage such events. In addition to the fun and games, I will also provide and maintain support for IUGA’s information systems, as the job requires. In the end, I can be the go-to guy for not only the requirements of my position, but any other matter as well. I have served my country, lived abroad, and made a smooth transition back into civilian life. I am motivated and passionate about working towards my Bachelor’s Degree as a member of the iSchool. Vote for me!

-Andrew

Harrison Weingard

The responsibilities for the IT Director are about supporting the IT needs of various activities of IUGA, such as LAN parties and other functions.  The goals of the IT Director is to setup the available technology to the best of my abilities for these functions; calling for extra help when I need it.

Although I’m not 100% sure what other functions would require the assistance of an IT Director, I would be willing to make myself available for those as well.  The only experiences I have with this position extends from the IUGA LAN Parties I love so dearly.  I try to help setup as much as possible when I can to make sure everyone has a good time.

If I am not selected for this position, that is fine, I will still be available to help if you need me,

Much <3,
-Harrison

Outreach Coordinator

Tanner Nicol (unopposed)

Like most 2nd year iSchool student I have been asked the question “What is Informatics?” O(n^3) times. In my opinion it is the best kept secret on campus.   I believe Informatics is the most sought after skill set on campus and the proof is in the quality of employment opportunity.

The opportunities to intern for Boeing, Metacentrix and Microsoft through the iSchool have been the most professionally rewarding experiences of my college career and I feel passionately about carrying on the lineage of iSchool job market domination!

My diverse background make me a strong candidate for Outreach Coordinator. I am heavily involved in the Greek System, Church community, Intermural athletics and Public Service. I have always seen myself as an unofficial spokesperson for Informatics and would love to make it official!

Upcoming IT Events

Posted by Braxton Ehle

There are two awesome opportunities I want to tell you all about, the first being the Linux Server Workshop and the second being a cyber defense competition.

Linux Server Workshop:

When/Where: 9:30am – 12pm in MGH 420

What:

A workshop to help strengthen the students’ technical abilities by guiding them through setting up and securing a complete web/email server.

The end goal is to be able to setup a Linux server(Debian) that can hold a Wordpress blog and Joomla powered website, as well as a web-based email client(RoundCube).

Who:

Anybody looking to boost their technical skills or get into security and server administration. Many of you have expressed interest in learning about getting started with Linux and learning about servers in general, but have little idea about where to start. This is a great place for people of all skill levels to get started.

If you want to participate, reserve a laptop from the iSchool(https://www.ischool.washington.edu/technology/checkouts.aspx) and send me an email at iuga@braxtonehle.com with your name so I can setup http://yourName.iuga.info as the web address of the server you’ll be creating.

Pacific Rim Regional Cyber Defense Competition:

When/Where:

March 20 – 21 at Highline Community College

I will be putting together a team over the next few weeks and then dividing up the tasks and practicing throughout the quarter both configuring the various services and protecting them.

What:

The PRRCDC is an annual event put on by the iSchool’s Center for Information Assurance and Cybersecurity in which teams from local school compete to maintain and protect a mock production network(complete with web, email, domain controller and database servers) from a “Red Team” of attackers. It is an intense 2 days that tests both your technical knowledge and more importantly your ability to handle stress and work as a team.

There is a great video that talks about the event at http://www.uwtv.org/programs/displayevent.aspx?rID=27982

Who:

There are 8 members to a team, each responsible for a certain service/server. If you are at all interested in information security, please consider joining our team. I am looking for people who are interested and eager to learn about the various technologies, not necessarily those who have a large amount of knowledge in a particular area.
Bonus:

Boeing will be there actively looking for people who can rapidly learn technology and deal with stress within a team context. If you are interested in working for them, they will be at the event specifically observing the event for that purpose. Last year there were recruiters from Microsoft there as well.

If you are interested in participating in either event, send me a message at either iuga@uw.edu or iuga@braxtonehle.com and I’ll send you more information about the events.

Thanks,

Braxton Ehle
