Upcoming IT Events
IUGAPublished February 3, 2010 at 1:22 pm No CommentsThere are two awesome opportunities I want to tell you all about, the first being the Linux Server Workshop and the second being a cyber defense competition.
Linux Server Workshop:
When/Where: 9:30am – 12pm in MGH 420
What:
A workshop to help strengthen the students’ technical abilities by guiding them through setting up and securing a complete web/email server.
The end goal is to be able to setup a Linux server(Debian) that can hold a WordPress blog and Joomla powered website, as well as a web-based email client(RoundCube).
Who:
Anybody looking to boost their technical skills or get into security and server administration. Many of you have expressed interest in learning about getting started with Linux and learning about servers in general, but have little idea about where to start. This is a great place for people of all skill levels to get started.
If you want to participate, reserve a laptop from the iSchool(https://www.ischool.washington.edu/technology/checkouts.aspx) and send me an email at iuga@braxtonehle.com with your name so I can setup http://yourName.iuga.info as the web address of the server you’ll be creating.
Pacific Rim Regional Cyber Defense Competition:
When/Where:
March 20 – 21 at Highline Community College
I will be putting together a team over the next few weeks and then dividing up the tasks and practicing throughout the quarter both configuring the various services and protecting them.
What:
The PRRCDC is an annual event put on by the iSchool’s Center for Information Assurance and Cybersecurity in which teams from local school compete to maintain and protect a mock production network(complete with web, email, domain controller and database servers) from a “Red Team” of attackers. It is an intense 2 days that tests both your technical knowledge and more importantly your ability to handle stress and work as a team.
There is a great video that talks about the event at http://www.uwtv.org/programs/displayevent.aspx?rID=27982
Who:
There are 8 members to a team, each responsible for a certain service/server. If you are at all interested in information security, please consider joining our team. I am looking for people who are interested and eager to learn about the various technologies, not necessarily those who have a large amount of knowledge in a particular area.
Bonus:
Boeing will be there actively looking for people who can rapidly learn technology and deal with stress within a team context. If you are interested in working for them, they will be at the event specifically observing the event for that purpose. Last year there were recruiters from Microsoft there as well.
If you are interested in participating in either event, send me a message at either iuga@uw.edu or iuga@braxtonehle.com and I’ll send you more information about the events.
Thanks,
Braxton Ehle
